Go Swimming at Fossil Springs

Fossil Springs may be one of the most beautiful natural waterfall/swimming hole areas in all of Arizona. At the start of this summer, we took the short drive/long hike version of this trip. This time, let’s do the long drive/short hike version instead.

We will meet at Anthem’s Park and Ride behind Circle K (39414 N. Daisy Mountain Dr.) on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 17 and promptly depart to our destination at 5:45 a.m. If you wish to carpool from a more southern location, please coordinate in the comments.

It could take upwards of 2 hours to reach Fossil Springs, almost half of which will be spent on a dirt road (12 miles driven slowly). It is very important that we arrive by 7 a.m. because the parking area reaches capacity quite quickly and we do not want to go halfway there only to be turned away.

We will take I-17 north to exit 285 for General Crook Trail. We will then turn right onto AZ-260 and another right onto Fossil Creek Road (FR 708). We will likely park in the area just after the bridge at the bottom and enjoy the day at the various natural waterfalls and swimming holes.

Please bring lunch, snacks and beverages – especially water. You may also wish to bring a small cooler and a backpack for the short hike to the swimming holes. Don’t forget sunscreen and you may wish to wear your bathing suit since there really is not a place to change. There is no trash service there, either, so be prepared to pack out what you pack in.
